Episode 147: We’re talking about the importance of having hobbies, and what it’s like having kids in the era of smart devices and continuous internet access.
Kevin is getting back to hobbies, particularly woodworking. Right now he is building a new work table that will serve the purpose of storage and space for working on projects. This week Kevin’s money went toward buying materials for this project.
As a part of this hobby, Kevin has been using his 3D printer more. A part of his strategy as a parent is to introduce his kids to this technology now so that they’ll have a handle on it when they’re older. This experience has been similar to learning computers as a kid.
Sean introduced his kids to home assistants by purchasing Amazon Echo Dots over the holidays. There is a service called Free Time which is a subscription service for kids, which allows parental controls and search blocks. This is a great service for blocking explicit content and preventing those surprise shipments from Amazon. Free Time also sets blackout times to limit use.
When used as a learning tool, home assistants can help kids learn about time, dates, the weather outside, etc. This can help them develop self-sufficiency through routine and schedule building.
